Trivia of the Week: Break a Leg!

In theater, it is bad luck to tell someone “good luck” before they go on stage. So instead of saying “good luck”, people say “break a leg”! It would be very bad luck if you broke your leg while on stage, but it really means the opposite. It started in theater, but now it is a common phrase.

演劇界では「good luck」と言って舞台に出る人の幸運を祈ることは、悪運を引き寄せるとされています。なので、「good luck」の代わりに「break a leg」と言います。本当に足を骨折してしまったらとても運の悪いことですが、本当の意味はその反対です。演劇界で始まった表現ですが今は一般的になっています。
