Mom: “That haunted house sure was scary! Are you okay? Not too scared?”
Daughter: “It wasn’t that scary! They weren’t real ghosts!”
If something was less scary than we expected, or not as scary as someone said it would be, we say it wasn’t “that scary”. You can use this pattern with other adjectives, too. “The curry wasn’t that spicy.” “Bob recommended this movie, but I didn’t think it was that good.”
母：「お化け屋敷怖かったね！大丈夫？怖くない？」
娘：「そんなに怖くなかったよ！本物のゴーストじゃなかったし！」
期待していたほど怖くなかった、又は誰かが言っていたほど怖くなかった、「そんなに怖くなかった」と言います。別の形容詞でも同じパターンが使います。「カレーがそんなに辛くなかった。」「ボブにこの映画すすめられたけど、僕が思うにはそんなに面白くなかった。」
