Modern English Idiom of the Week: Take it with a pinch of salt!

“Did you hear Bill’s amazing story?” “Yes, but you have to take what Bill says with a pinch of salt.”

When we cook, we add a little salt to the food to bring out the flavor. When we hear a fantastic story, we take it with a pinch of salt, because it might not be entirely true. Whenever we aren’t quite ready to believe what someone says, we take it with a pinch of salt.

「ビルのあのすごい話、聞いた？」「聞いた、でもビルの言うことは鵜呑みにしちゃいけないよ」

料理では、塩を少し加えて味を呼び出します。信じがたい話を耳にすると、塩ひとつまみを加えて真に受けないようにします（take it with a pinch of salt）。その話は全部本当だとは限らないからです。人の言うことを信じきれないときは「take it with a pinch of salt」。
