“You should help with my new project. It’s going to be big, and you’ll be in on the ground floor.”
Sometimes it’s advantageous to be involved in something when it first starts, so you have a long history with it later when it is successful. For example, if you bought shares in a big company when it first started, you would make a lot of money as the company grew. But why is it “ground floor”? Imagine an elevator in a building with no basement. If you are waiting for an elevator in the middle of the building, it is often very crowded, but if you are on the ground floor, you can get on when the elevator is empty.

始まったばっかりのことに参加すると得することがあります。成功した場合、最初から関係を築いてきたからです。例えば、今は大企業でもまだ小さかったときに株を買っていれば、会社が大きくなるとともにたくさん儲けることができます。でもなぜ「1階 ground floor」というのでしょう？地階のないビルを想像してください。ビルの中階でエレベーターを待っていると込んでいてなかなか乗れませんが、1階からだと空いているので簡単にエレベーターに乗れますね。
