To recognize something is to know what it is because you have seen (or heard, etc.) it before.
「前に見たことがあったから、その男の人だとわかった」
「この作家の本は全て知っているつもりだったのに、この本は見覚えがない」
「えっ、あなただったの！カツラを被っているからわからなかった」
「Recognize」は前に見たことがある（もしくは聞いたことがある等）からわかるという意味です。
