Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, although not the closest to Earth. It’s also called the Dog Star. If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series, you might recall a character named Sirius who could transform into a dog. The name “Sirius” comes from a Greek word for “glowing”. Its association with dogs comes from its location in the Canis Major constellation. It seems to have a connection to canines in other cultures as well. For example, the Chinese named it “celestial wolf”, while different Native American peoples named it after the wolf, dog or coyote.
