“Hmm, no answer. I guess he’s not home.”
“Did he get my email?”
“I guess so. He didn’t say anything.”
When you guess the answer to a question, you choose an answer even though you don’t know the correct answer. We also use “I guess” when we aren’t confident that something is true. It looks like he isn’t home, but it’s not the only explanation. There’s no evidence that he didn’t get the email, but we don’t really know.
「ふむ、返事がない。留守かな。」
「彼に私のメールはとどいた？」
「届いたんじゃない？彼何も言ってなかったけど。」
「Guess」とは質問の答えがわからない時に適当に答えを選ぶことです。他にも正しいかどうか自信がないときに「I guess」をつけます。留守のように見えますが、そうとは限りません。メールが届いていないという証拠はありませんが本当はわかりません。
