“Heading to the gym? Are you going to work out?”
“No, I work in the cake shop next to the gym.”
“Work” means to do a job for money, or to perform a task that takes effort. Add “out” afterwards and the meaning changes completely. “Work out” means to exercise for the sake of fitness.
「ジムに行く途中？運動しに行くの？」

Work はお金のために仕事をする、または努力をして何かをする事などの意味です。後ろに out をつけると意味が完全に変わってしまいます。 Work out とは健康のために運動することです。
