TNR stands for “trap neuter return”. It’s a method to control and help feral cats. Volunteers first trap the cats using humane traps. Then veterinarians perform spay or neuter surgery, and sometimes other health care. Finally the cats are returned to the area where they live. This way, the cats cause less trouble for humans (by fighting, marking territory, and having kittens), and the cats benefit too (they are healthier and they don’t give birth to kittens that will just be destroyed). Some veterinarians in the US and even in Japan will help with this work for a reduced price or for free.
TNRとは Trap（捕獲する）Neuter（去勢する）Return（元の場所に戻す） の略で、野良猫を助け制御する方法です。ボランティアはまず、猫を傷つけない捕獲機を仕掛けて捕まえます。次に獣医が避妊・去勢手術（場合によって他の治療も）を行います。最後に猫を元の場所に戻します。こうすることで人間とのトラブルが減り（猫の喧嘩、縄張りのマーキング、子猫を増やすこと等）、猫にとっても良い事になります（健康状態が良くなり、殺処分されてしまう子猫が増えない）。アメリカだけでなく、日本にもこの活動を支援して安くもしくは無料で行っている獣医がいます。
