“A field day” brings to mind a day of fun and activities outdoors (i.e. in a field), or a festival. But we use it as an idiom to mean a frenzy of activity and excitement, with a negative connotation.

Field day は、屋外（つまり草原）などでの楽しいアクティビティーやお祭りの日をイメージしますが、イディオムの場合は否定的な意味で、誰かが慌ただしく興奮して悪さをするイメージになります。
