One of Aesop’s fables tells the story of a fox who was walking along and saw some grapes. He was hungry, so he wanted to eat the grapes. However, they were up very high and no matter what he did he couldn’t reach them. “They’re probably sour anyway,” he said, giving up and walking away. So when someone speaks badly of something they can’t get, we say, “Sour grapes.”
イソップ寓話の中に、散歩中のキツネが葡萄を見つけるお話があります。とてもお腹がすいていたキツネは葡萄を食べたくてたまりません。ですが、とても高い所にあるのでどうしても手が届きません。「どうせ酸っぱいだろう」と言いながらあきらめて去ってしまいました。手に入らないものを悪く言うことを sour grapes 「酸っぱい葡萄」と言います。
