When someone starts a new job, they must first “learn the ropes”. This comes from sailing, where you literally have to learn all the ropes and how to use them. Now it means learning the equipment and procedures of any job.

新しい仕事を始める時、まずlearn the ropes（縄を覚える）必要があります。この表現は船乗りが船上でロープや綱の使い方を学ぶことからきています。今ではどんな仕事の設備や手順にも使える表現です。
