What is at stake, or the stakes, are what will be decided by the outcome of an event. If the stakes are high, the match, battle or other event is important. If little is at stake, you don’t need to worry. In a high-stakes poker match, large amounts of money are bet.

At stakeであるもの、又はthe stakesはこのイベントによって決まるということです。より危うさが強いということは、試合、戦い、出来事がより重要ということです。危うさがあまりないなら、心配は要りません。賭け事で良く使う単語です：「賭け率」が高いポーカーのゲームでは、大金を賭けてプレイしていています。
