A tap is in between a gentle touch and a hit. If I hit your shoulder, it will hurt and you will be angry. If I touch your shoulder, you will probably think it’s an accident. If I want your attention and saying “excuse me” hasn’t worked, I will tap your shoulder.

Tapとは「触る」と「打つ」の間です。人の肩を叩いたらその人は痛くて怒るでしょう。肩にトンッと触れてしまったら、それをわざとだとは思わないでしょう。「すみません」と言っても気づいてもらえないときはやはり肩をタップします。
