Mother alligators watch over their eggs until they hatch, but don’t take care of the baby alligators after that. The babies must fend for themselves. This means to take care of oneself without protection or guidance.

母のワニは孵るまで卵を見守るのですが、孵った後は赤ちゃんのワニの面倒を見てくれません。赤ちゃんのワニは「fend for themselves」。これは案内も守りもなく自分のことを自分ですることです。
