Shotを「試し」「試み」という意味で使うことがあります。もともとは銃で「撃ってみる」と言っていたのでしょうが、今はどのような行動にでもメタファーとして使えるようになっています。
Sometimes we use “a shot” to mean “a try”. It probably started with people talking about shooting at a target with a gun, but now it can be a metaphor for any kind of action.
