“So you’re saying I should just quit?” 「やめちゃえばいいと言いたいのか？」
“That’s not exactly what I said.” 「いや、ちょっと違います。」
何かが「ちょっと違う」ということは、似ているところはあるが全く同じという訳ではありません。語調をやわらかくするのに使うフレーズです。「これが欲しかったドレス？」「うーん、ちょっと違う。」皮肉に使うこともあります：「彼は天才とはちょっと違う」（彼は頭が悪いと言っています）。
When something is “not exactly” something else, it may seem the same in some ways. Usually we use this phrase to soften our words: “Is this the kind of dress you wanted?” “Well, not exactly.” Sometimes we use it sarcastically: “He’s not exactly a genius.” (The speaker implies that he’s stupid.)
