A ruler is a smooth, straight stick with lines that can be used to measure length. A longer ruler can also be called a measuring stick. In the U.S. most people use inches, but sometimes we also need to use centimeters, like the rest of the world. So most rulers in the U.S. have inches on one side and centimeters on the other.
「まっすぐな線が書きたい。定規を貸してくれる？」
「ruler（定規）」は長さを図るための目盛りが書いてある、まっすぐで平らな棒です。ちょっと長い定規は「measuring stick」という名前でも呼ばれています。アメリカではほとんどの人がインチを使いますが、他の国のようにセンチを使う必要もあります。それで、ほとんどのアメリカの定規には片端にインチ、反対側にはセンチが書いてあります。
