Crack a bookとは本を開いて勉強することです。たぶん真新しい本を初めて開くときのイメージが由来です。本の背が固くて音がすることがあります。ですが、何回も読み返すことや広く開きすぎることで本の背に消えないしわを作ってしまうことがあって、それもcrackと言えます。
To “crack a book” is to open a book and study. It probably comes from the image of opening a brand-new book for the first time. The spine of the book is stiff, so it might make a noise. However, we can also “crack” the spine of a book by reading it a lot (or opening it too wide), and creating a permanent crease in the spine.
