“His alibi holds water.” 「彼のアリバイはありえる。」
“Does anyone have an explanation that holds any water?” 「少しでも納得のいく説明はないか？」
説明など人が言うことをバケツと例えましょう。穴が開いていたら、水を入れるとすぐ流れ出てしまいます。穴とは矛盾や納得いかない事を意味します。水を保てないものは真実であり得ません。水を保てるものは真実なである可能性が高いです。
Imagine that an explanation or statement is a bucket. If there are holes in it, any water you put in the bucket will fall out right away. The holes are inconsistencies or things that don’t make sense. Something that doesn’t hold water can’t be true. If it holds water, it may be true.
