A business or home is not a ship, but we can use ships as a metaphor for anything. When things are run tightly, it means everything is done correctly and efficiently. If the captain ran a loose ship, the crewmen would be lazy and do a sloppy job.
「スミスさんが何であんなに怒るのかわからないよ。小さなミスだったのに。」
「まあ、彼は何もかもちゃんとしないと気が済まないタイプだからね。お客様のために何でも完璧にしたいんだ。」
会社や家は船ではありませんが、船は色んな例えに使われます。物事を「しっかり」行うことは、何もかも正しく効率良くこなすことです。逆に「緩める」と、船乗りが怠けてしまい中途半端な仕事をしてしまいます。
