If you tell a story that is close to the truth, but not quite true, you are stretching the truth.
A: How do you say “carrot” in Japanese?
B: Um…
A: Don’t you know? You told me you spoke Japanese.
B: I may have stretched the truth a little.
真実に近いけど厳密に言えば真実ではない話をすると、これは「stretch the truth（真実を曲げる）」と言います。
A:日本語で「carrot」はなんというの？
B:えーと…
A:知らないの？日本語ができると言ったのに。
B:ちょっとだけ真実を曲げたかもしれない。
