Phrase of the Week: Cut up about it

“Her mother was away on business for her birthday? Is she okay?”
“She’s still pretty cut up about it.”

If someone is “cut up about” something, they are hurt emotionally. This phrase often describes how someone feels in the days or weeks after something very sad happens to them. The body is not injured, but the heart has many deep cuts and may need a long time to heal.

「お母さんは出張で誕生日にこられなかった？大丈夫なの？」
「まだまだ悲しんでいる。」

この場合の「切り刻まれた」のは感情的に傷ついていることです。とても悲しいことがあったあとの数日間、数週間の気持ちを表すのによく使います。体は怪我していないが、こころに切り傷がいくつかできていて治るのに時間がかかるイメージです。
