To drop someone or something off, you take it somewhere and leave it there. It is convenient to drop people or things off on your way to somewhere else. If you stay along with them, you have not dropped them off. Later, you might want to “pick them up” on your way back home.
「店に行く途中、映画館で降ろしてくれない？」
誰か又は何かを「drop off」するときは、どこかへ連れて行ってそこに置いていきます。どこかに向かっている途中で人や物を降ろすのは便利です。自分もそこに残ったら「drop off」とは言えません。後で帰り道の途中にまた「迎えに来る」ことも多いでしょう。
