To take someone’s word is to believe something they say. If you don’t take their word for it, you have to see or experience it yourself before you will believe it. If you trust the person or just don’t feel like confirming their story, you can take their word for it.
「この本すごく面白いよ。だけど私の言葉を信じるより、自分で読んで確かめたらすぐわかるよ。」
「読書があまり好きじゃないから、君の話を信じることにする。」
誰かの「言葉を受け取る」ということは、その人の言っていることを信じることです。信じないなら、自分で見たり経験したりして確認する必要があります。その人を信頼しているか、確認する気になれないかのときは、その人の言葉を信じればいいです。
