“Ouch! That smarts!” 「痛い！」
「That smarts!」と聞こえたら「頭がいい」と言っていると思います？実は動詞のsmartは痛むという意味で使われます。頭がいいという意味の形容詞のsmartよりも起源は古いかもしれません！ドイツ語の「痛む」と同じ由来で、それから「鋭い」という意味になってその後「頭がいい」という意味で使われるようになりました。
If you hear me say, “That smarts!” will you think I’m saying something is intelligent? “Smart” as a verb is another way to say “hurt”. This usage may be even older than “smart” as in “intelligent”! It came from the same root as the German word for “hurt”, and came to mean first “sharp” and then “intelligent”.
