The titan arum plant is also called “corpse flower” because it smells like a dead animal that is rotting. It shares this quality with the Rafflesia, and they both grow in Sumatra, but they are different plants. This month many people gathered to see a corpse flower nicknamed “Spike” bloom in Chicago, but the flower did not bloom. The plant takes up to seven years to bloom, so the fans were disappointed.
ショクダイオオコンニャクは動物の死体が腐ったような臭いから「屍花」と呼ばれます。この特徴はラフレシアと共通していて、共にスマトラ島に自生するのですが、全く別の植物です。今月シカゴで「スパイク」と名付けられたショクダイオオコンニャクをたくさんの人々が見物しましたが、残念ながらスパイクは咲きませんでした。花を咲かすのに7年間もかかりますので、スパイクのファンはがっかりしていました。
