Trivia of the Week: Lucky Penny

If you find a penny on the ground, it is not worth much money, but it can bring you good luck! A penny has two sides: heads (a picture of President Lincoln) and tails (a picture of the Lincoln Memorial). Some people believe that if the tails side is facing up, you will get bad luck from touching the penny!

地面にペニー（1セント）が落ちているのを見つけたら、大金ではないけど、幸運を運んでくれるそうです！ペニーには表（リンカーン大統領の絵）と裏（リンカーン記念館の絵）があります。裏面が上を向いていると幸運ではなく悪運が付くと信じる人もいます。

Now, this is an American penny. Why is it called a penny? In the UK we have pounds and pence, not dollars and cents. One pound is 100 pence. Penny comes from pence. So, American friends, why do you say ‘penny’ for ‘cent’ and not ‘cenny’?

PS, we also say ‘P’ as in 1p or 10p.
