A ponytail is a hairstyle where the hair is gathered behind the head. It resembles a horse’s tail, and a pony is a small horse.
Another hairstyle is pigtails. It consists of two bunches of hair on either side of the head. It is also named after an animal tail, but it doesn’t really look like its namesake.
ポニーテールは頭の後ろで髪を結ぶ髪型です。馬のしっぽに似ています。ポニーは小さな馬の事です。
ピッグテールと呼ばれる髪型もあります。頭の両側に髪を結びます（お下げ髪）。これも動物のしっぽにちなんで名付けられていますが、その動物みたいに見えるって訳じゃないですよ。
