Ellen: Did you see the new building down the road? It’s finally finished.
Opal: Yeah! But what an eyesore!
Ellen: I know! It’s a real monstrosity.
An eyesore is something really ugly. If your neighbor puts up a big ugly decoration in his yard, you might complain that it is an eyesore. The word sounds like it makes your eyes hurt (sore) to look at it, but ugly things cannot actually cause eye pain.
エレン：この近くの新しいビル見た？やっと完成したでしょ。
オーパル：うん！でもほんと目障り！
エレン：でしょう？！本当にひどいね。
「Eyesore」は、何かとても目障りなものを指します。近所の人が不細工な大きい飾りを庭に飾ったら「eyesore」だと文句を言います。目（eye）が痛む（sore）ように聞こえますが、実際は醜いものを見ただけでは目は痛くなりません。
