“Can I hold the baby?”
“He was holding a gun!”
“Hold” has many meanings. It often means to have something in your hand(s) or arms, such as the baby or the gun above. With the gun, you could say, “He has a gun!” without changing the meaning much. If he is holding a gun, it’s definitely in his hand. If he has a gun, it could be in his hand or in his coat pocket.
「赤ちゃんを抱っこしてもいい？」
「銃を持っていた！」
holdにはたくさんの意味があります。上記の赤ちゃんと銃の例のように、手や腕で何かを持つという意味でよく使います。銃の場合はHe has a gun と言っても同じような意味です。
holdを使うと手に持っていることがはっきりします。 has を使った場合は、手に持っているのか、コートのポケットに入っているのかはっきりしません。
