“I didn’t know the area very well yet, because I had just moved there the previous year.”
“Previous” describes something that comes before the thing in question, in a sequence of things. It’s useful because we can’t say “last year” when talking about the past or future. The year now is 2014, so last year is 2013. If I’m talking about something that happened in 2001 and I need to mention the year 2000, I have to call it “the previous year”.

「Previous」は順序や順番で、今話している事の前に来るものを指す単語です。過去や未来の話で「去年」と言えない場合などに役立ちます。今年は2014年ですから、「去年」はどうしても2013年になります。2001年の出来事を話している時に2000年のことを言いたい時は、「その前の年 the previous year」と言わないといけません。
