“This is really good. Can I have seconds?”
“Sure, there’s plenty!”
When we say we want “seconds”, what we mean is a second helping of some kind of food. What if you have three helpings? The third helping doesn’t have a special name, as “thirds” won’t be understood unless you’ve already said “seconds”.
「これ美味しいね！お代わりしていい？」
「いいよ、たくさんあるから。」
「Seconds が欲しい」、つまり食べ物のお代わりをするという意味ですね。では、お代りを2回する場合は何て言うの？「３杯目」の特別な単語はありませんが、もし thirds と言うならその前にseconds をしておかないと通じませんよ。
