Your spine is your backbone. It’s made of vertebrae. Animals that have backbones are called vertebrates. Animals without them are invertebrates. Metaphorically, having a spine allows you to stand up for yourself. “Don’t be spineless. Show those bullies that you have a backbone!”
Spineとは背骨のことで、Vertebrae（脊つい）で出来ています。背骨のある動物は vertebrate と呼ばれ、背骨のないものは invertebrate です。背骨があるから自分のことが擁護できると例えて、こんな風に使います。「臆病になってはダメ。あのいじめっ子に立ち向かうんだ！」
